Where have you come from?

new music

Passion Pit
I've been getting into a ton of new music this year. Two favorite artists have come out with new albums, Bloom by Beach House and Here by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. Both were mediocre in my opinion, falling short of the awesomeness of their predecessors. Aside from those two, I have become acquainted with Lana Del Rey, The Head And The Heart, Purity Ring, Passion Pit, and Lykke Li. All are fantastic artists and are each so unique, unlike pop music and The Hits, which are loathsome.

The whole idea of popular music is run by corporate America to make music that is catchy and make money, by exploiting the next trend, which is why there is so little content in these songs with generic music and shallow lyrical content. Justin Beiber is that current trend- tons of money is poured into him, making his image and writing his music for him. Once he is a has-been, corporate execs will stop pouring money into him and will find the next trend to promote. I like music that is unique and  original and different- music made by musicians and promoted by music-lovers. This is the case with all the above musicians listed and also the simple fact that they are not well-known, which is a great incentive to like them.

This year I was able to see Coldplay, The Head And The Heart, and Ed Sharpe all in concert and all 3 were fantastic.

Music-hunting is a hobby, and indie music has had a huge surge with the internet. Musicians who are not cookie-cutters can finally promote themselves, spreading unique talent that is not mass-commercialized. Music-hunting is an adventure, and I love it.
